Do you think you should be on social media but don’t know where to start? What should you post, and how often should you post it?

We’ve compiled a list of top tips to help get you started and/or to better connect with new and existing customers.

Decide which social media platforms are right for your business: It may seem like being active on all of them is a good idea, since this will broaden your reach and help spread the word, but that is not necessarily the best strategy. Being present on every social platform will make it harder to manage all of them effectively and you’ll find yourself in a “Jack of all trades, master of none” situation. Look at your customers and see what platforms they are on and go from there!

Know your customer: Start by compiling data on your current customers. Then, dig deeper with social media analytics. You’ll soon start to understand who’s buying from and interacting with you online.

Create content specifically for the platform you are using: Each platform has nuances and best practices for generating engagement. Your business may not need to have a presence on every platform, but for your posts to be targeted, you need to have a strategy that is specific to the platform you’re using.

Be consistent: You don’t need to post every day, but you should post regularly and consistently across the platforms you are using.

Look at what is trending: keep an eye on popular trends emerging on each platform. If

Interact with your customers: don’t just push a message out there and leave it flapping in the wind! On top of posting high-quality and relevant content, make sure you’re keeping an eye on each platform you use and engaging with your customers. Answer questions that come up on your posts, handles or hashtags.

Mention followers in your posts and stories: sharing your followers’ content on your social channels (and tagging them, of course), helps you establish relationships with some of your biggest fans.

Share quality visual content: A recent study showed that we remember only 20% of what we read and 80% of what we see. Think about that when choosing images and videos to share on social media.

Diversify your content: Statistics show that mixing up your content can increase engagement and impressions, from a simple image post to the more complex infographic and video content. Mix it up, share blog posts, put behind the scenes videos in your stories, share great images from your customers and don’t be afraid to try new things.

Keep an eye on analytics: Like many things in the digital world, trends and habits are constantly changing. Keep an eye on analytics (free tools like Facebook and Instagram insights are a great place to start), to see what is performing well and engaging your customers. Apply learnings to future posts.

Encourage Engagement: Increasing engagement on your social media posts will increase your brand’s visibility meaning more people will see your content! A few simple ways to achieve this is by asking questions in your captions to encourage discussion or asking your audience to tag a friend in the comments.

Create content with intent: Don’t just post for the sake of posting. Use your social platforms to create content that informs your audience and is worth their time. This could be your opening times, updated menus, directions on how to get to your venue, where to park, the history of your business, etc. Avoid solely promoting your product with the intent to drive your customers to buy. Social media is less about selling your product or service and more about creating a community!
