Australia is home to the oldest living culture on Earth and Aboriginal guides across the country offer a real connection to the place and a new way of experiencing it. Every part of Australia is Aboriginal country and every part of that country has a series of stories and experiences that are unique to it.

Therefore it comes as no surprise ‘Aboriginal Experiences’ is recognised as part of Tourism Australia’s ‘Signature Experiences of Australia’ program.

Now, the Sunshine Coast looks set to combine our love of nature, sport and the great outdoors with a new event celebrating our own Aboriginal culture.

After the success and growth of the Blackall 100 ultra-marathon, Run Queensland has turned their attention to a new race event – the ‘Bunya Spirit of Youth’ that will take place over two days challenging groups to compete in a variety of team building activities and a 22km trail through the Blackall Range in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Taking place 24 – 26 August 2018, Run Queensland has partnered with the Jinibara People Aboriginal Corporation (JPAC), Queensland Conference and Camping Centres (QCCC), and Goombuckar Creations to establish a new prestige race event for younger Queenslanders.

With the permission of JPAC, the event will honour the Bunya Festival to celebrate the coming together of people from many places for story-telling, team-building and recreation, with a little competition thrown in for good measure.

The weekend will have a significant focus on Aboriginal culture with a Welcome to Country from the Jinibara People, and Goombuckar providing a dance and corroboree experience on the Saturday night. The Blackall Range is a very significant area for Aboriginal people and the event aims to educate the community and visitors’ about the Sunshine Coast’s rich Aboriginal history.

Run Queensland encourage sporting teams, organisations, or even groups of friends to participate, with the only requirement being that they must be aged between 14-18. Teams are competing for more than $18,000 in prizes, kindly donated by QCCC.
