If you ever needed an illustration of what defines the special qualities of the Sunshine Coast it was when Adam Scott accepted an invitation from his old mate, Wayne Perske, to play nine holes at Maleny Golf Club.

Here was a world champion golfer used to $5 million tournaments playing a round that costs as little as $5 for juniors.

A long-time Sunshine Coast resident, Adam didn’t let Coronavirus stop him from sharing his home-town with a packed gallery, live-streaming “Nine Holes with a Mate” to his 220,000 Instagram followers.

His “mate”, Maleny Golf Club pro Wayne Perske, helped provide a compelling event, pushing his more illustrious partner all the way, finishing even after nine.

The reaction on Instagram – and in the worldwide media – was incredible.

What came across was the authenticity of the encounter. And it wasn’t just Adam and Wayne who starred, with the picturesque course providing a powerful endorsement of the region’s natural attractions.

Of course, we’re not short of great golf courses on the Sunshine Coast. Adam’s father, Phil, designed Peregian Springs, while courses such as Pelican Waters, Coolum and Twin Waters have played host to major tournaments.

But Adam was attracted by the Maleny Golf Club’s relaxed, easy-going vibe and the passion of its membership. They were the driving-force in the course’s expansion from 12 to 18 holes earlier this year, and unlike many other clubs, they think of the future by encouraging a very active junior membership.

We will certainly be incorporating these down-to-earth elements in our new marketing campaign, which will be launched once travel restrictions are loosened.

Post-coronavirus, travellers will be looking for holidays that emphasise the great outdoors, natural attractions and authentic experiences.

Fortunately, the Sunshine Coast has built its tourism profile on such pillars. Our Hinterland and coastline provide an enviable collection of experiences from 5-star luxury getaways to great-value camping and caravan holidays.

With new social distancing measures in play, Maleny Golf Club is open to guests for bookings. With low petrol prices, we can expect many of Scott’s social-media followers (within 50km) to pack their clubs in the boot and head to the Hinterland to follow in the footsteps of a legend.
